Diastema, the gap between top front teeth, is considered by some people as a source of social and sexual attractiveness, for others it is an obnoxious flaw, which they would get rid of once and for all as quickly as possible.
Research shows that 89 % of people with diastema would be happy to eliminate the awkward space between the teeth, and for the vast majority, its existence is a good reason to hide their smiles.
The fact that the diastema causes extreme emotions, in visible on forums among their participants: some complain, others comfort. Meanwhile overseas, the gaps between the teeth are more and more fashionable - the Americans are increasingly rejecting a perfectly beautiful smile that came from the talented hands of dentists, and returning to the natural and original appearance.
Your doctor should decide whether the gap between the teeth is a problem that must be eliminated.
- Small diastema, to 2 mm, is not so visible, but bigger ones are very noticable. Besides, a larger gap is often a problem for the patient, because it is usually accompanied by other defects.
Diastema, sometimes, should be treated not as evil, but rather as a favorable space for the development of the teeth. Dentists estimate that nearly 50% of children between six and eight years of age has a gap between their teeth. Experts point out that the parents of these children should enjoy it instead of being worried. It would be best, however, if the child's teeth were looked at by a dentist.
Permanent teeth are much larger than the milk ones and if you have a lot of space, they will for sure fit in the jaw. However, if the gap stays, and this happens in case of almost 6% of population, it may mean abnormal bone structure, overgrown tissue and other problems.
You should start to worry about diastema when, except the large gaps between the teeth, there is also tendency to bite the lower lip, large tongue stuffing the teeth to the front, and other occlusal abnormalities - then orthodontic treatment may be required.
There are a few possibilities to eliminate diastema:
- Cutting the upper lip frenulum - the treatment costs about 300 zł. Dentists perform the surgery after the appearance of canines in childhood, because then the best results can be obtained.
- Wearing braces
- Veneers - however, veneers are not good in patients with large or wide gaps - they cause additional expansion or enlargement of the teeth.
- Supplementing with composite filling - quickly removes diastema.
Dentists in Poland definitely do not recommend the elimination of diastema with domestic methods - such as applying elastic band for hair on your teeth.
