Coffee has antibacterial properties, and effectively prevents the bacteria from appearing on the teeth and causing tooth decay - Italian scientists have reached such a conclusion.
Coffee prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth thanks to some particles contained in natural coffee. Gabrielaa Gazani from the University of Pavia has reached the conclusion. Together with her colleagues, she has analzyed samples of fresh roasted coffee from different countries for several months.
During testing it turned out that instant coffee, combats the bacteria that cause tooth decay stronger than ground coffee. The results of decaffeinated coffee and caffeine one seem to indicate that the antibacterial properties do not depend on the presence of caffeine in this popular beverage, the researchers have stated. They argue that the most responsible for such properties of coffee can be a water soluble coffee component, determining also smell and taste of the drink.
Although the results seem encouraging, the researchers themselves approach them cautiously, stressing that the antibacterial activity of coffee requires further study. However, it can be hypothesized that coffee can be effective in fighting tooth decay, which has become a disease of our civilization.
