Gum disease causes erectile dysfunction

A study recently was carried out in Turkey concerning 80 men aged 30-40 years with erectile dysfunction. The scientists compared the results of men in the group with  erectile dysfunction with the control group in which men did not have such health problems. It turned out that more than half of the men from the first group had gum disease. In the control group only one fifth of the men studied had problems with the periodontium. After analyzing factors such as lifestyle, age, income, education, the researchers realised that men who suffer from severe and chronic periodontal disease are over  three times more likely to be exposed to the risk of erectile problems. The exact cause of this dependence isn’t known yet, but other study results suggest that it may be due to the fact that chronic gum disease may affect the development of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disorders, in turn, result in erectile dysfunction.

Scientists suggest that doctors treating patients with erectile dysfunction should take into account the existence of factors such as periodontitis during  the treatment.
