We tend to eat; our teeth at work, but the free dental treatment in Poland funded by the employer is still a great rarity. Meanwhile, bruxism (nervous and involuntary clenching of teeth) is a problem of a growing number of employees. The reason, very often, is stress - not only in the work place. The most common effects of bruxism are: damaged enamel, headaches and irregularities in the operation of the temporomandibular joints, but in extreme cases even occlusal curvature.
Another serious problem is biting items in stressful, tense situations. We bite virtually all thigs: spoons, cups, paper, pens, pencils. It can cause not only serious fractures, but also infections. A study conducted on the subject in a group of 1000 employees revealed a rather pesimistic results:
- 93 % of Poles feel stressed at work;
- 21 % bite pencils out of anger, and 44 % grinds their teeth;
- 71 % clench their teeth out of rage, and 44 % do it at work;
- 93 % drink coffee during work, 67 % drink cola and other sweetened beverages, and 35 % drink energy drinks;
- 43 % eat sweet snacks at work, 35 % eat fast food dishes;
- 32 % smoke cigarettes.
... and only 8 % clean their teeth after meals. We usually spend 8-10 hours at work and the teeth should be cleaned twice during this time, not to mention about the flossing...
